Nicotine Anonymous Northern California Intergroup Minutes

January 12, 2008

Alano Club, San Francisco

In attendance: Terry, Keith, David, Joyce, Harry, Ed, Melissa, Steve, Michael M.

  • Meeting was opened with Serenity Prayer and introductions

  • Minutes from November meeting were read and approved with amendments

    • Melissa will send amended minutes to Mike to post on website.

  • Meeting Reports

    • Monday Petaluma attendance same as before, 8 & up

    • Thursday San Rafael same as before, 8 & up

    • Tuesday Santa Rosa about 8-10 people, sometimes more

    • Saturday San Rafael had 10 today, starting to build back up

    • Saturday San Francisco 8-15, no problems filling service positions (for a change)

    • Monday San Francisco still small, 2-4, but the people who do show up are very grateful, and rent is reasonable so it's OK for now

    • Monday Oakland averaging 6-9

    • Alameda meeting has closed

    • Steve may get in contact with people from Kaiser to try to start a San Mateo County meeting.

    • Harry spoke to the person who was going to start a meeting in Hayward, but they were discouraged, and it probably won't happen after all. However, the Monday Hayward meeting is still on the schedule and the website, so Michael will call to confirm it's closed.

    • Saturday Palo Alto meeting is "barely surviving," maybe 2 people/week

    • Thursday Sacramento meeting is "booming"

  • Officer's Reports

    • Treasury (Ed)

      • As of today, amend the Treasurer's Report to subtract $56.42 for chip purchase (Expenses), and add $51.32 to the Delegate Fund from the Saturday San Rafael meeting.

      • Discussion about the September Intergroup meeting held in Sacramento. The information we have is that Mark paid for rent for that space out of his own pocket. Since then, the Monday Sacramento meeting has sent money to Intergroup, which we currently list under "Income" as a donation, but the question is, did they intend for that money to go towards rent? If they did, we don't know how to get the money to Mark, because he hasn't answered phone calls or emails from any Nic A members for several months now. Motion made that if Mark ever requests to be reimbursed for the money he paid for rent for the Sacramento Intergroup meeting, our Treasurer can reimburse him without having to check with Intergroup first: PASSED.

    • Chips (Keith)

      • Has sold $72 worth of chips to Thursday San Rafael, Monday Petaluma, Tuesday Santa Rosa, etc

      • Harry has been struggling to get order form into electronic form; maybe Mike B. or Catherine C. can help.

      • Harry will send Michael M. a hard copy of the order form to include in the next mailing of schedules

      • Wording on order form will change accordingly: "Chips can be ordered in small quantities."

      • Trinity Recovery Chips in Palmdale CA, has contacted Intergroup and wants to be our supplier of chips. She sent us samples of chips which we passed around to look at. Before we make a decision we need more information from her, which Harry will obtain:

        • Does she have the rights to use the Nicotine Anonymous logo

        • What are her shipping charges, and are they comparable to Pioneer's (our current chip supplier)

        • Can we have an order form with a firm quote on pricing

    • Meeting List (Michael M.)

      • No updated Winter list had been put out because there had been no changes

      • A reminder (and for some of us, new information) that a prior Intergroup group conscience had decided that updated meeting schedules would go out three times a year, in January, May, and September.

      • Michael will have a new schedule out by the end of January

      • Michael will also start contacting each meeting beforehand to make sure they're still happening before a new schedule goes out. He will get contact info from World Services from Keith to assist him in this.

    • WSO

      • Mark, our WSO rep, is not here. Ed, however, has been back on the board since September. Although he missed the meeting in October, he will attend the next meeting in Los Angeles in 2 weeks. Some issues that will be discussed at that time:

        • Online meetings

        • 2009 Conference. It will be in Ohio, with the double themes of "Birthplace of Miracles" and "Welcome Home."

    • Website

      • Mike B. is not here. However, the website is now being updated whenever we send information for him to post.

    • Chair Report (Harry)

      • Because the Palo Alto meeting is barely surviving, we will not have an Intergroup meeting in that area.

      • Near Yreka, someone is trying to start a meeting. Should they be affiliated with Northern CA Intergroup? Maybe not officially (since they are so far away they may not be able to make it to Intergroup meetings), but it would be good for all parties involved for them to be listed on our website and schedule.

      • There is also a meeting in Arcata, similar situation. They are listed on the World Services meeting list but not ours. Harry or Michael will contact them.

  • Old Business

    • 2008 Retreat (Keith)

      • It will be held at the same place as last year, Samuel P. Taylor, where camping is available. There's also interest in the place where the picnic has been held in the past, Lake Lagunitas, but there's no camping there.

      • An idea for next year: Tilden in Berkeley. There's camping, and also people can get there by public transportation. Keith will get more info about Tilden before deciding where to hold the Retreat next year.

    • By-laws and Policies & Procedures documents

      • No progress on this since the last meeting. Joyce is the only one working on it since Mark has not been in contact with Intergroup. Joyce will not be able to attend the March meeting, so motion made to table By-laws and P&P documents until then: PASSED. Harry may work on it in the meantime.

    • Future Intergroup meetings and their locations

      • May

        • Scheduled to be in Petaluma. Keith will ask the Saturday San Rafael meeting if we can have our Intergroup meeting right after theirs at the same location.

        • We will be electing Officers at this meeting.

      • March

        • Will be held at Mandana House in Oakland.

        • It will be a Delegates meeting.

          • If you're interested in being a delegate for the Conference held May 2-4 in NY, you must either show up or send an email/letter to the Chair expressing interest.

          • Though not required, it's suggested a delegate have a year or more nicotine-free and be active in a Nicotine Anonymous meeting.

          • We can send about 8 delegates, depending on the number of meetings we have in the Northern CA area.

          • Some discussion was had about how to disperse the delegate fund amongst the delegates. In March we'll know the number of delegates; in May we'll know how much money we'll have in the fund. For now, we can tell our meetings there will be "help" with expenses (at this time an undetermined amount).

      • September

        • Original thought was to have it in Palo Alto, but this is no longer an option. At some point we'll have to decide where we should hold it; there's still enthusiasm for moving the meeting around.

        • Keith will mention it to San Rafael.

        • Sacramento is a possibility too. We can start the rotation all over again.

  • New Business

    • Any preparation necessary for the WSO Conference? Not really, since we're not hosting it this time! Already mentioned Delegate information. We need to tell World Services who are delegates are by 30 days before the Conference.

  • Motion made to adjourn the meeting: PASSED!
